Academic Advising at Kettering

Our proactive and dedicated advisors help you plan smart, move fast, and stay ahead—so you can hit your goals and start leading from day one.

What do ASC advisors do?

ASC advisors help you build a course schedule and a Co-op plan during your first term. After that, your major department leads advising, but the ASC stays in your corner. From adding a minor to adjusting course loads or planning study abroad, we help you make strategic decisions throughout your degree.

ASC advisors help you stay competitive and career-focused by building strong academic habits, navigating challenges, and linking your coursework to real-world results. They also help you build relationships across campus that support your goals—now and after graduation.

How do I get connected with an advisor as a first-year student?

Before your first academic term, you'll connect with ASC advisors during your S.O.A.R. session (Student Orientation and Academic Registration). During this session, ASC staff will introduce you to the advising process and walk you through your first term of courses and degree-planning tools.

You'll gain further insight during your First Year Foundations course (CILE 101), where you’ll learn how to manage your long-term academic plans.

Additionally, the ASC hosts Academic Exploration Night for all new students, providing an opportunity to discover the many ways you can customize your academic journey at Kettering, including exploring minors, Study Abroad opportunities, and learning how to work on your Bachelor’s and Master’s at the same time.

How does Kettering’s advising system work?

ASC advisors support you at every stage—helping you stay focused, solve problems, and maintain momentum. If a course challenges you, or you want to sharpen your performance, success coaching can help you fine-tune your time management, improve communication, and stay on top of competing demands.

ASC advisors can also meet with you for things like:

  • Degree planning
  • Resource navigation
  • Adding a minor
  • Altering the sequence of courses
  • Studying abroad
  • Navigating an accelerated master’s program
  • Taking a leave of absence

Under the guidance of the Supplemental Learning Coordinator, the ASC Lab gives students one-on-one coaching in challenging courses and hands-on support with tools like MATLAB, Java, Python, and more.

Whether you’re troubleshooting a project or leveling up your coding skills, our peer tutors are here to help you stay sharp—and stay ahead.

Here are some ways students can connect with the ASC Lab for academic support:

  • One-on-one Peer Tutoring

Facing a tough course? Our Peer Tutors offer course-specific, one-on-one coaching that helps you master complex concepts, build study strategies, and tackle difficult assignments.

  • Drop-In sessions

ASC Lab Peer Tutors host academic drop-in sessions for math, science, and computer science courses each term. These weekly sessions provide a convenient, collaborative environment to sharpen your understanding, ask questions, and stay on top of demanding coursework.

  • Writing Support

From first-year essays to senior thesis, the ASC Writing Support team helps you sharpen your writing with clarity, confidence, and purpose—so your ideas stand out in every course.

The First Year Experience (FYE) course helps you build a strong foundation for success—academically, personally, and professionally—as you transition from high school to college and your first Co-op.

You’ll tap into critical resources like the ASC, learn how to navigate Co-op and class schedules, and build communication skills that help you connect with professors and solve problems early.

FYE also connects you to the Kettering community through shared challenges and real-world preparation, so you start strong and stay sharp.

Your senior thesis is where everything comes together—classwork, lab experience, faculty collaboration, and the real-world insight from your Co-op. It’s the most advanced example of Kettering’s learn-by-doing model.

Most students develop their thesis through their Co-op sponsor, but you can also pursue projects with research faculty, community partners, entrepreneurs, or your own venture.

The ASC Thesis Team partners with you and your faculty advisor to help you move from first concept to final manuscript with clarity, structure, and purpose.

The ASC offers testing accommodations for students with documented needs under the ADA. Services include alternative testing locations, extended time, and the use of a reader, scribe, or headphones, etc.

Next Steps

At Kettering, you won’t just get academic support—you get strategies, coaching, and resources that help you perform at a higher level in class, in Co-op, and your career.
